Hyperlocal Camouflage

Medium: Collage on canvas

Dimensions: 45” x 60’

Collection: Private

This piece was meant to be part of a series — but ended up being a one-of-a-kind creation. While the original idea and painting were awesome(!), no second piece followed. The mold may have been broken, but not before this artwork found its perfect home in a Durham residence.

The concept works anywhere—that's the point. I took the U.S. Army's 21st-century digitized camouflage pattern and updated it with situational details. Leveraging the camo’s basic tonal values, I incorporated authentic contextual elements. This approach allows us to create camouflage on the fly for any location or purpose. Whether it's a hipster corner with your favorite coffee shop, a trail in the National Parks system, or something more militarized, the camouflage becomes HYPERLOCAL. Using a series of photographs and assigning simple light, medium, and dark tonal values, the pattern emerges naturally. In this case, I cut out and hand-applied 3,539 individual squares to cover the canvas.
